We urge the Government to reverse its decision to cut Universal Credit

Expert Link stands with other charities in their call to reverse the decision to cut Universal Credit and to freeze Local Housing Allowance. Without action, many people, in particular families, could fast become homeless.

For most claimants, there is already a shortfall between the housing support they receive and the rent they have to pay. At a time where prices of food and energy are rising, a 20% cut to Universal Credit will force some families to choose between putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their heads.

As a panel of people with direct experience of disadvantage, we recognise the traumatic effect that this could have on parents and children alike. We are concerned that the Government is making this decision without being clear about the affect this will have on people now and in the longer term.

The last year has seen some JobCentres improving their work with communities, but this proposed cut will damage the relations that are so desperately needed to support people to rebuild their lives post pandemic.

This cut will plunge many into homelessness, taking away the security needed for them and the country to recover.

We strongly urge the Government to reverse its decision to cut Universal Credit and to freeze the Local Housing Allowance.
